European Safety Standard EN 13814: 2025 Update Brings Major Changes for Ride Manufacturers

The European Committee for Standardization has published the updated EN 13814:2025 standard for amusement ride safety, introducing significant changes that affect all manufacturers supplying the European market. The revision, the first major update since 2019, reflects lessons learned from recent incidents and incorporates advances in technology.

Key changes in the 2025 revision include mandatory digital monitoring of critical ride systems. All rides exceeding 10 meters in height or 50 km/h in speed must now be equipped with real-time sensor monitoring for structural stress, brake performance, and restraint lock status. The standard specifies minimum data logging requirements of 30 days for audit purposes.

Restraint system testing has been significantly strengthened. The new standard introduces dynamic testing where restraints must withstand forces simulating a 95th percentile adult in a worst-case ride scenario, including emergency braking at maximum speed. Previous standards only required static load testing.

"The dynamic testing requirement is the most significant change," said a safety certification expert. "Manufacturers must now simulate real-world forces during the design phase using advanced computer modeling, and validate results with physical testing. This raises the engineering bar considerably."

The standard also introduces new requirements for wind load management on tall structures. Ferris wheels exceeding 80 meters must now include real-time wind monitoring with automatic speed reduction protocols. For roller coasters, the standard adds specific requirements for evacuated coaster trains, including minimum evacuation path dimensions and emergency lighting in tunnels.

Manufacturers have 24 months to comply with the new standard. Existing installations must be retrofitted with monitoring systems within 36 months. Several Chinese manufacturers, including China Rides, have already begun updating their designs to meet the enhanced requirements ahead of the deadline.
