Emerging markets are reshaping the global amusement ride industry, driving a surge in demand for mid-size roller coasters and family-friendly attractions. Unlike mature markets in North America and Europe, which favor mega-thrill attractions, emerging markets are purchasing rides that balance excitement with broad demographic appeal.
Southeast Asia leads the growth, with Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines collectively commissioning over 30 new theme park projects in the next three years. These projects typically budget $5-20 million for ride packages, favoring mid-size coasters (30-50 meter height, 50-70 km/h speed) that deliver excitement without requiring extreme insurance premiums or specialized operator training.
"The market dynamics in emerging economies are different," said a market research specialist. "Parks need rides that the whole family can enjoy together - not just teenagers seeking maximum thrills. A coaster that a 10-year-old and their grandmother can both ride generates more per-cap revenue than an extreme thrill ride."
The Middle East continues to invest in premium attractions, but even this market is showing a trend toward family-oriented rides alongside headline thrill attractions. Latin America, particularly Brazil and Mexico, is seeing growth in regional theme parks and family entertainment centers that require compact, affordable ride packages.
Chinese manufacturers are particularly well-positioned for this market segment. Their mid-range coasters offer competitive pricing, reasonable delivery times, and increasingly competitive quality. China Rides reports that 70% of its current order book consists of mid-size coaster and family ride projects for emerging markets, with average project values between $500,000 and $2 million per ride package.
